► (1826-98) Pintor francés. Expuso por primera vez en el Salón de 1852 una Piedad, con claras influencias de Delacroix.

Pintor francés. Desarrolló un estilo distintivo adscrito a la modalidad simbolista, y se hizo conocido por sus pinturas eróticas de temas mitológicos y religiosos. Sus obras como Edipo y la esfinge (1864) y La danza de Salomé (1876) han sido descritas con frecuencia como decadentes. Hizo una serie de experimentos técnicos, entre ellos el raspado de sus lienzos. Sus pinturas no figurativas, ejecutadas de una manera suelta y con gruesos empastes, ha llevado a algunos a considerarlo como precursor del expresionismo abstracto.
